Pigmented lesions represent the first signs of aging. There are several different types of pigment. Some are present at birth, some are caused by hormones and others are from sun damage.
Using the principle of selective photothermolysis, light-based treatment targets different chromophores in the skin from sun damage. These optimal wavelengths of light clear pigmented lesions by targeting melanin. The damaged pigmented lesions are then cleared by the body by undergoing a mild desquamation and sloughing off.
The procedure is easily tolerated with no downtime. There is one week’s time when the pigmented lesion turns dark then sloughs off improving the aging appearance. This typically results in one treatment, but some resistant pigment may take two treatments. Usually the face/neck/chest/back and hands have great outcomes while the legs are much harder to improve.
