Kybella vs. CoolSculpting

There are two relatively new non-surgical options that are quickly becoming popular options to eliminate submental fullness (aka, double chin) – Kybella and CoolSculpting.

Which treatment is better: Kybella or CoolSculpting? Here is a comparison of these two non-surgical treatment options.

Kybella

Kybella is the only injectable approved by the FDA for eliminating unwanted fat under the chin. It is a synthetic version of deoxycholic acid, which causes the rapid destruction and absorption of fat cells while also preventing future fat accumulation. The destroyed fat is cleared via the body’s natural metabolic processes. Only fat cells are targeted; all other cells and tissue are not affected.

CoolSculpting

The FDA has approved of over seven different areas for CoolSculpting, including some smaller areas of the body; such as under the chin. A new applicator called the CoolMini is allowing patients to freeze away their double chin.

CoolSculpting is a non-surgical body contouring treatment that uses cryotherapy to eliminate unwanted fat. The procedure uses a non-invasive applicator to deliver controlled cooling to the surface of the skin in order to freeze fat cells to the point of destruction but not destroy any underlying structure and skin. The destroyed fat is expelled from the body naturally through metabolic processes.

Similarities

Both Kybella and Coolsculpting can dramatically improve the chin area, eliminating of excess fat and leaving behind a smooth defined jawline. Both treatments are also non-surgical and require no anesthesia or downtime. Side effects of both are minor and include swelling, possible bruising, redness, or lumpiness; all of which resolve on their own, within a few days to a couple of weeks after treatment.

While improvements are possible after a single treatment of Kybella or CoolSculpting CoolMini, most patients will require a couple of sessions of treatments in order to achieve their final desired result. The results are not immediate. Both will take up to a month to see results and three months to see final results. Neither treatmetn claims to treat any loose skin only the fat.

Differences

Kybella is performed through a series of injections. However, the benefit of the injectable nature of Kybella is that it can treat smaller more isolated areas. This gives Kybella an advantage in treating individuals with a lower quantity of under-chin fat.

CoolSculpting targets the area by using an applicator. It is great for patients with larger areas. CoolMini treats the whole area that the applicator engages with, rather than smaller targeted areas.
